In 1963, Ed's other son Gordon joined Smitty's with his sewing machine business and eventually became a furniture buyer. Business grew steadily necessitating numerous expansions.

Hanover Store that was opened in November of 1963. It was a
revolutionary store that displayed in 100 tastefully accessorized
room settings with complementary departments for stereos / TV,
drapery, broadloom, pianos and organs, sewing machines, mattresses
and Hanover Kitchen cabinets.
From day
one, Smitty's founders recognized the potential of being
surrounded by Canada's leading furniture manufacturers. Peppler's,
Knechtel's, Durham Furniture, Bogdon and Gross, Heirloom, Krug
Bros. were only a few of the companies in the immediate area. |
